If you’ve been watching the start of the clay-court swing so far, one young Italian may have caught your attention. The man I am referencing here is Lorenzo Musetti. He is an incredibly talented player, with great feel on the ball, a great ‘tennis brain’, and he is great fun to watch. But given that he is currently ranked down at 68 in the world, he hasn’t received as much attention as many of the other top guys. However, having watched him closely over the last 12 months, I really think that he needs to be on more people’s radars.

More specifically, is he a guy we should be keeping an eye on ahead of the French Open? In my opinion, the answer is a huge yes! If you don’t agree with me yet, I have a feeling that you will after reading the details below.

Musetti and His Magic – Why He Is a Strong Contender

Musetti might be ranked 68 in the world right now, but don’t let this ranking fool you. He is an extremely solid player with serious ability. And in my opinion, he has the capacity to do great things at the 2022 Roland Garros event. Here’s why:

Clay Court Performances 2022

The clay-court swing may have only just begun, but I’ve already seen some fantastic signs from Musetti. At the Monte Carlo Masters just a few weeks back, Musetti dispatched both Benoit Paire and Felix Auger-Aliassime – a top 10 player. And in the next round, he lost to one of the top clay-court players in the world, Diego Schwartzman. However, he actually had a great chance to win that match, being up a set and a break. 

At the time of writing, Musetti is into the last 16 of Barcelona too. Again, he will face Schwartzman, which will be an interesting clash.

Roland Garros Performance 2021

If you cast your mind back to the 2021 French Open, you may recall that Musetti did extremely well. He destroyed Goffin in the first round, he beat Nishioka in the second round, and he also beat Cecchinato in a five-set thriller in round three. After that, he played Novak Djokovic, and as it happens, he managed to win the first two sets. He was playing spectacular tennis at the time, but Djokovic seemed to just turn a screw and he came back to dominate Musetti. 

With that said, Musetti has proved that he has what it takes to produce some huge wins at the French Open!

General Style of Play

The last thing I’d like to point out relates to the way he actually plays the game. I actually love his style of play. He is patient, he mixes the play extremely well on both sides, and he has fantastic hands to play drop shots. Musetti is also a fantastic grinder, boasting great defensive skills when pushed to the extremes of the court. So for me, he is certainly a guy that you should be watching out for at the French Open!
